So so so, we meet again, memorial day weekend and I might be the only one in America not BBQ'ing. I see peoples posts on failboook about their parties and their BBQ's and all that jazz but I ain't having it lol.
I stayed home this fine Saturday messing with computer bits and trying to reinvent the wheel. I have several computer projects going on at this time and not enough ambition to do them. Today though I somehow managed to work up a bit and tackle the Apple G4 Cube mod. I got to thinking about replacing the backplate with a custom solution so it didn't look like a hillbillies front teeth.
Here is some back story on this. Just over a year ago I was looking into buying a new Mac. Well we all know how much they cost and how much they have their products on lockdown. Now don't get me wrong I love me some bulletproof OS and Apple produces but I hate me a bad ass computer I cannot update the hardware in a couple years time. You basically have to buy a whole new computer and at the cost of them you need to donate some body parts.
So my strolling about the interwebs I do stumble upon this "hackintosh" site. I was in amazement and totally dumbfounded. Here was this way to make Mac OS work on PC bought hardware, total nip joy! So I did as anybody smart enough decided to do, research!!! (you'd be surprised as the amount of non-researching mofo's out there, makes my head hurt) So I went through this site like stormtroopers looking for droids. They had lists of hardware that ran OS X (Macs Operating system) very easy and some high end stuff as well. I was in computer nerd heaven, I thought to myself "I used to build car and plane models, I can build a computer!" HAHAHA funny shit is I never built a computer and my previous train of thought had dug me a hole that took a bit to get out of.
I gathered a list of hardware that the site showed to be the best compatible set up. I was need really badly to replace my 2006 iMac that I was worried would take a crap on my at any time leaving me Macless. I was looking at getting a Mac Pro as a replacement as they are the only Mac systems you can kinda upgrade with a graphics card and some memory but they are not cheap by any means. So I had this list of hardware and it was roughly $1000 for it but the Mac equivalent was around $3700. So far I was in for a win! but the only thing I couldn't decide on was a case. I wandered the interwebs searching for computer cases that suited my taste unable to find one. I loved the Mac Pro case ans was all I really wanted, then bam it hit me, the G5 case looks like a Mac Pro case why not put my PC hardware into one of those!
Well here I was, a list of hardware, a dream of converting a Apple Powermac G5 case and not a damn clue. I was so stoked about this bad ass idea that I decided to wander the interwebs more looking to see if it was done before. Low and behold it was and it was by a lot fo people, I almost felt cheated as I wanted to be the first but nope G5 mods galore, plus Mac Pros. I said screw it I was going to go to town on this anyway. I found a G5 case for a pretty good deal at the time and got what other supplies I needed and of course my PC hardware and I set off to do something I had never done before, build a computer from scratch in a custom case.
Well I did it, there was a couple of bumps along the way but I did build it and I did install OS X on that bitch and it did rock lol. I was happy as shit with it. When it was done I gathered up all the photos I had taken during the build and I made a thread on that same site I first ran into while looking up this "hackintosh" thing and I made a build thread explaining what I had done. There were a few ahead of me there on that site and now there have been meny after me and some with some great mods. But mine got a golden thread tag, I know there are some that are much more detailed then mine in the documentation and pictures which at times makes me want to hand off that golden thread title but then I remember that I'm damn proud of what I had built.
From there on I got this bug to build modded Apple computers because I love there case designs and well a system running OS X just doesn't look right in some strange computer case. I decided to build that Mac Pro mod, better then my awesome G5 mod. So I sold off the G5 mod to a gentleman in Canada. I pulled all my hardware out and installed all the hardware he wanted in a driveless computer, driveless meaning no OS on the harddrives because one cannot sell a "hackintosh" because that violation is much worse then taking your paid for OS and installing it on a non Apple branded computer. But I put all new hardware into my awesome G5 and mailed it off hoping that it would last it's new owner many years of awesomeness. It took a long time to make and build that G5 mod only to have UPS destroy it while in route to Canada. I actually cried.
So right now I have my build sitting in an Antec case with one full G5 that is running and one gutted G5 ready for some modding action. I also have a Mac Pro case gutted and ready for its modding down the line. I have awesome plans for these and I am not going to sell them to anybody at all. These babies will be all mine to mod and display for people to see. I also have a G4 Cube which I am trying to figure out a new backplate as I was mentioning before this long long wandering story lol.
I am hooked because of that "hackintosh" web site. I had dove right into it and figured enough out to help people with there issues and all that. I gained the notice of the admins who then offered me a moderator position and well now I help where I can help. They have a great group of moderators all with goof heads and I have been able to call some friends as well. See how my blogs kinda intertwine together lol, if you read the previous ones you can see it.
But now because of all of that involvement I am not registered in the Apple developer program, studying the Apple Certified Macintosh Technician certification and am trying to think of the next awesome mod to build. I actually enjoy repairing and building computers and I found it pleasing, don't know why but I do. There are some great inspirational admins on that "hackintosh" site and I enjoy working with them and helping as much as I can.
Well now that i ran all off track about the weekend and all that, I can say that I will be taking a road trip tomorrow. Also on Monday I will be making thanks on Memorial day and thanking all those who have served and currently serve and those who have made the greatest sacrifice for our country.
I enjoy my weekends the best I can.
and thanks TMx86 crew :D
